Pomodoro (and personalised software)
I've been witnessing (and experiencing) some panic about what generative AI means for software engineering. On one hand, our industry and employment look a lot less certain, and there is a whole host of issues like environmental impact, further concentration of monopolistic power and the privacy issues involved.
On the other there is this really exciting idea of personalised software. Giving every person the ability to write their own tools that suit precisely their use case, and the way they work, is so powerful. The barrier to entry of understanding how to speak the language of computers is gone: in it's place is a new paradigm for interaction with tools that fit around you and not the other way around.
It might not be production strength, and it won't replace enterprise software. I don't think it really needs to. It just needs to work.
I've been struggling to find where I came across this idea of personalised software. If you know who came up with it, please let me know. Lots of people have talked about it.
Anyway, this in part was prompted by my vibe-coded pomoduro app. Up until now I have been using an online one, and this way I can avoid the ads. pomo.josh.scot
